The Citadel – Gironde Estuary

The 17th century Blaye Citadel, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers magnificent views of the largest estuary in Western Europe – The Gironde Estuary .

Masterminded by the famous military engineer Vauban, this complex fort was built to protect Bordeaux from foreign naval attacks. The Citadel of Blaye is one of three spectacular fortifications. It can be found on the right bank, west side of the modern downtown area.

It is absolutely worth your time to make this stop. If you have extra time, there is a nearby local market that serves fresh produce and great wine.
